DIRECTORS NOTE:
I have restarted this director’s note countless times, and each time I start over, I have felt the urge to reach out to my mentor, friends, peers, and other directors for advice. As I sat staring at the empty document on my computer, I realized that being able to look around me and ask my fellow students, faculty, staff, and other creatives for advice and wisdom is a gift I will forever be grateful for. The theatre department here at Concordia has brought me so much understanding, support, and love throughout these past four years. So thank you to everyone I have had the privilege of working with here, especially the professors who have taught me many lessons I will forever keep with me in and out of the classroom. Specifically, thank you to Professor Vezner for being a profound mentor during this process. Getting here would not have been possible without you and your guidance.
No Exit is an existentialist play written in the wake of WWI and WWII by Jean-Paul Sartre. This cautionary tale of nihilistic dread shines a mirror back at society, warning us to look at who we are at our core and how we treat others. In true existentialist fashion, Sartre leaves the characters with no resolution at the end of the play. This ending opens the door for conversation and is why I chose this play for my senior showcase. Genuine and open-minded discussion will help us learn the lessons Sartre conveys through this play. As the lights fade and we all exit the theatre, I hope we can all look into ourselves and how our actions affect those around us. Then we can truly understand one another on a deeper level and make the world a better place one decision at a time.
Working with everyone on this production has been an honor, and I sincerely hope you enjoy No Exit.
